    Erroneous Solution

    If x is in [ 4 , ) , then 4 x , and - 4 - x , thus - 2 - x 2 .

    Therefore, - 1 1 - x 2 , and we conclude that 1 - x 2 is in the interval [ - 1 , ) .

  2. Simplify the following expressions.
